Deuteronomy serves as Moses’ “farewell address” to his fellow Israelites. It is specifically directed at the new generation of Israelites that will inherit the Promised Land, which he and his contemporaries have been anticipating for forty years in the wilderness. Similar to Leviticus, Deuteronomy contains instructions for the Israelites to follow before and during their entrance into the Promised Land. This book differs from Leviticus in that it is geared toward the commoner rather than the priests and clergy. Deuteronomy shows that God loves and instructs the everyday individual as much as those that fully devote their life and work to Him.
